Why does my visa application need a compressed photo?

Official portals enforce upload size limits — India e-Visa accepts only 10 KB–1 MB, and most US visa and other portals cap uploads at 240 KB. Photos straight from a camera are usually 2–8 MB and get rejected before you even reach the photo rules.
