UK visa photo requirements 2026: the digital-only rules

Applying for a UK visa is a fully digital process — and so is the photo. There's no printed photo to attach; the file you upload to the online form is the photo an officer sees. Get it wrong and your application can be returned, with weeks of delay for a fix.

Here's exactly what a UK visa photo must meet in 2026, straight from the gov.uk guidance.

One file, digital only

The UK visa application is online, and the photo rule is digital only — there's no printed step. The file you upload must be:

• at least 600×750 pixels (we deliver 827×1063 px at 600 dpi — comfortably above the minimum)
• JPG or JPEG, between 50 KB and 6 MB
• vertically orientated (portrait, not landscape)
• saved exactly as taken — not altered by computer software or filters

The photo itself

• Plain light-coloured background with no shadows — white, light grey or cream works
• Head, shoulders and upper body in frame
• Plain expression, mouth closed — not smiling or frowning
• Eyes open and visible
• No sunglasses or tinted glasses
• Not mirrored or flipped

The "unaltered" rule is the one people fail

gov.uk is explicit: the photo must not be altered by computer software or filters. That rules out three very common habits:

• background replacement apps (removing the wall behind you and pasting a white background)
• beauty filters or automatic retouching
• sharpening or contrast "enhancements" applied before upload

If your photo is altered, it can be rejected — and the background-replacement habit is the most common offender. The plain light-coloured background must already exist in the photo you took.
